CUTTING COSTS WITH AN INTELLIGENT TELEPHONE NUMBER MAPPING SOLUTION
The Enea ENUM (Telephone Number Mapping) is a turnkey solution that provides a bridge between the mobile network and the Internet, allowing network operators save capital and operational expenditure. It helps overcome the challenges associated with building and operating heterogeneous multi-vendor networks across different technological domains.
One of the challenges is to support telecom services that are provided by means of internet and other networking technologies. Services such as VoIP, VoLTE, and VoWIFI have become increasingly popular in addition to a wide range of other voice and messaging services. Still, subscribers expect to be reachable via a single phone number and operators simply have to fulfill this requirement to stay competitive.
The Enea ENUM solution makes this possible with a very short time-to-market. The solution is based on standard subscriber phone numbers (i.e. the E.164 format) that are automatically mapped to Universal Resource Identifier (URI) sets for provisioning of the services concerned. For example, the Enea ENUM will translate a mobile network number (MSISDN) to a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) address that is used to route calls in VoIP networks (IMS/VoLTE) as illustrated.
The main benefits of implementing the Enea ENUM solution are related to reduced capital and operational expenditure. The cost savings can be realized as the solution includes a standard-compliant DNS server, which supports a variety of other DNS resource record types (e.g. A/AAAA, NAPTR, S-NAPTR, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, PTR) to allow name resolution for IMS network elements. The fact that most maintenance activities can be carried out while the product is in operation, without any impact on subscriber services, is also an important factor.
The ENUM IWF supports access to other network elements via SS7/SIGTRAN MAP protocol. By means of the ENUM IWF it is possible to interrogate network elements (e.g. a Number Portability database or HLR) via the MAP protocol and to provide this information (e.g. Cell ID) to the requesting network elements (CSCF, MGCF) via the DNS/ENUM interface. The ENUM IWF is an optional feature additionally to the existing ENUM server functionality.
Moreover, the Enea ENUM can also be used as (Mobile) Number Portability DataBase NPDB if plain ENUM data is sufficient. Using the ENUM database as NPDB provides synergy effects meaning no cost intensive investments for the operator necessary by extending of existing network infrastructure.
The Enea ENUM solution is based on a framework that supports a range of protocols and telecom applications. The framework does not only meet the functional requirements but also provides outstanding performance, scalability, and robustness. The solution can easily be adapted to the individual needs and requirements of a specific network environment or virtualized deployment (e.g. OpenStack and VMware).
